Míchel, the head coach of Girona, has emerged as Ajax’s top candidate to fill their managerial vacancy, following Arne Slot’s refusal to take the job.
The Dutch giants are currently working with their third manager of the season after John Heitinga was sacked in November and interim boss Fred Grim resigned in March.
According to multiple reports, Ajax’s sporting director Jordi Cruyff—who took over the role in February—has identified Míchel as the ideal choice to lead the team. The 50-year-old Spanish tactician led Girona to their first-ever UEFA Champions League qualification in 2024, but his contract expires this summer.
Under Míchel, Girona are fighting to avoid relegation for the first time, sitting just four points above the drop zone ahead of Monday’s match between Sevilla and Real Sociedad. Journalist Matteo Moretto from Marca previously reported that talks between Míchel and Ajax were underway, though the coach insists he will only consider his future once Girona’s top-flight status is mathematically secure.
Arne Slot Declines Ajax Approach
On Monday, Mike Verweij of De Telegraaf revealed that Jordi Cruyff also reached out to Liverpool manager Arne Slot. The Dutch coach turned down the offer, reportedly stating that a return to the Eredivisie does not align with his current career path.
Slot has faced pressure following a disappointing season, but he is expected to remain at Liverpool after Champions League qualification was virtually secured, according to Sky Sports.
Ajax is enduring one of its worst campaigns in decades. With 55 points from 32 matches, and having missed out on the final Champions League spot, they need two more points to avoid their lowest league finish of the 21st century.
